Weekly Notes 26-6-24

Féile na nGael Weekend

Friday the 21st June saw months of preparation come to fruition when our under 15 Hurling and Camogie teams headed to the sunny South East to participate in the National Féile na nGael competition in County Wexford. The players had shown great commitment in the preparation for the competition with many of them training throughout their Junior Cert exams. After arriving at SETU in Waterford the teams had light training sessions at the excellent facilities.

On Saturday morning the girls travelled to Gusserane O Rahillys GAA club where their first game was against the host club.  Parnells had their work cut out as this team had been the Co Wexford champions at U14 in 2022.  This was a hard fought game with some excellent teamwork from Parnells being key to securing a victory. Tralee Parnells 1:06 Gusserane O Rahillys 1:01.  The second group game was against opposition from St. Annes in Waterford. A strong defensive  display from Tralee Parnells allowed our midfield to control the game and feed our forwards who took their chances. The girls came out comfortable winners on a score of 4:07 – 0:02.  The third game in our group stages was a tough physical battle with Crossmaglen Rangers of Armagh. Tralee Parnells girls never shy away from these tough encounters and finished well on the scoreline of 1:06 to 0:03

As the girls topped their group they qualified for the Cup semifinal where they would meet Navan O Mahonys from County Meath. The breeze which had been a factor all day strengthened and during the first half, against the breeze, Parnells conceded two early goals. In the short Féile games this proved a huge challenge.   Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the team, who battled back into contention and with momentum swinging their way in the final few minutes, a final score proved elusive.  The girls lost out on a place in the final, by the narrowest of margins, score Navan O Mahonys 2:01 Tralee Parnells 1:03

On Saturday morning the boys went on to Bunclody for their group games. First up was a strong Trim team from Co Meath. After a really tough physical game Tralee Parnells came away victorious on a scoreline of 7 points to 2. The score does not reflect how tight the game was. Next up were the host club Bunclody, this was another really tough game with our lads coming out with a win by the tightest of margins of a one point win, 7 points to 6.  So onwards to the Tier 1 semi final.

After a quick lunch break the boys were up against Birr from Co Offaly.  Our lads gave it their all on the pitch but scores were hard to come by.  The loss of David Cullinan our full forward in the earlier game to a broken collar bone was felt during the game.   It was a valiant effort but the boys came up short losing to Birr by 1-4 to 2 points.  A very tired battered team came off the pitch at full time but no one could have asked more of every player on the panel.  We would like to wish David a speedy recovery.   Birr went on to win the Division 2 title.

The Camogie Management team are extremely grateful to their sponsors Hugh Culloty and Sons , Tony Hennessy and Declan Costello and Sons.  The Hurling Management team are extremely grateful to their kit sponsors MJ’s Diner, Belfield Christmas Trees and Allbrite Engineering.

The club would like to thank friends, families and the community who contributed to the fundraising efforts that helped to make this wonderful experience for the players.  The club are also immensely proud of all of the players  who demonstrated remarkable dedication and teamwork throughout the competition and who represented themselves, their families, the club, the town and the county with pride. We look forward to the next adventure with these very talented groups of players

U10 Camogie

Our U10’s girls had a great evening of Camogie in Crotta on Monday evening. Well done to all the girls, they enjoyed their evening and performed very well. Keep up the practice at home! Many thanks to Abbeykillix for organising

U13 Camogie

The U13’s played a very competitive and challenging game against a skilful Ballyduff side at Páirc na Darach on Wednesday night. Both teams excelled with some exceptional play on display. Thank you to Ballyduff for a sporting game and to referee Diarmuid Brennan.

Camán to Croker

Our combined U10 & U12 Camogie squads enjoyed a hugely successful trip to Dublin for Camán to Croker last Sunday.  The event was part of the Camogie Association’s 120th anniversary celebrations where sixty four teams from across the country were selected to represent their clubs at a fun-filled day of blitz matches .  The Parnells girls enjoyed this fantastic opportunity for all players to play in some highly contested games with some fantastic displays of skill and resilience. A massive word of thank you to all who travelled but particularly to coach John Diggin who has invested so much in this great group of players

Summer Camp

The club will hold a summer Hurling and Camogie camp for children aged 5 to 13.  The camp will run from Monday 29th to Wednesday 31st July from 10am to 1pm at Caherslee GAA grounds.  The online booking system will open during the week. €20 for Club members, €40 non club members

Senior Hurling

It was a tough evening at the office as our senior squad suffered a heavy defeat in round two of the County Senior Hurling Championship in Sunday in Austin Stack Park. Despite their best efforts, the team couldn’t overcome the formidable challenge posed by Abbeydorney. This was only their second outing at this level and the gap in experience and skill was evident.  However, as the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day. There will be a lot to learn from this match and the lads will need to dust themselves off and come back stronger.

Sympathy

Tralee Parnells Hurling and Camogie Club would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Brendan Cullinan and family on the death of Brendan’s father.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílís.
